Blue is the Warmest César
First, sorry for the pun in the title.
Tomorrow (January 31st), the nominations for the 39th César Awards will be revealed (check out the Academy's website).
The last time I tried to predict the entire César nominations was 2008, and another French Palme d'Or was in the running: "Entre les murs" / "The Class". It went on to win only one award for Best Adapted Screenplay, while the underdog "Séraphine" was the big winner.
In 2009, "A Prophet" swept. 2010 was an exciting race until the very end, with "The Ghost Writer" winning Directing/Writing/Editing, but "Of Gods and Men" finally prevailed. It became the first Best Picture without a directing, writing or leading acting win since 1995's "La Haine". 2011 was all about "The Artist", with an upset by Omar Sy ("The Intouchables") in the Best Actor category. And 2012 saw "Amour" become the second film in César history to win the "big five": Picture/Director/Actor/Actress/Screenplay.
So will this year see another triumph for Abdellatif Kechiche ?
The interesting trivia is that his film is poised to win the exact same awards won by "L'Esquive" and "The Secret of the Grain" in 2004 and 2007: Best Film/Director/Screenplay/Breakthrough Actress. Also, if Kechiche wins Best Director, he will join Roman Polanski as the most awarded director ever, with 3 César. Both directors would also have a perfect streak of 3 wins in 3 nominations (well, except if Polanski gets a 4th nom this year).
But reducing 2013 to one film seems unfair, and if a pic were to upset among this great bunch of nominees, I guess it would be "The Past".
The 39th César Awards will be handed out on February 28th. The ceremony will be broadcast on Canal+.
This year's host is actress Cécile de France ("Hereafter") and president is actor François Cluzet ("Tell no one").
So here we go (I left out the Documentary and Short categories, having not seen enough of the potential nominees). Don't forget to share and comment, and also vote for our 3rd Movie Parliament awards !

UPDATED (01/31/14)
The list of nominations has been revealed.
Overall score: 63/103. I correctly predicted all the Actress and 1st Film noms ! (bragging rights) But totally missed in Sound.
My predictions for the winners are underlined.
They missed:
- Zero nom for François Ozon (Jeune & Jolie), "Au bonheur des ogres" and "Angélique".
- "Mood Indigo": only tech noms (Production Design, Costume, Score)
- "Quai d'Orsay": only 3 noms (but one for Supporting Actress that will be much talked about....!)
Strong showings:
- "Les Garçons et Guillaume..." leads with 10 noms ! I didn't expect the film to also sweep the techs. 5 noms for actor/writer/director Guillaume Gallienne !
- "Jimmy P." in Pic/Dir/Screenplay.
- "Michael Kohlhaas": 6 noms including Mads Mikkelsen for Best Actor.
Trivia:
- Two films are nominated for the "top five" awards (Pic/Director/Actor/Actress/Screenplay). Only 6 films in history had achieved this feat. "9 Month Stretch" and/or"Venus in Fur" will make history by being the first "big five" nominee(s) NOT to win Best Film.
- All the Best Film nominees were selected in Cannes, except "9 Month Stretch". 4 were in Competition.
- All the Best Actress contenders are previous nominees in this category, except Emmanuelle Seigner. 4 have already won there.
- Catherine Deneuve scored her 12th nomination, making it the 3rd most nominated performer ever (tie with Daniel Auteuil) , and the 2nd most nominated actress (only behind Isabelle Huppert). With her 7th nom, Sandrine Kiberlain enters the Actress top 10.
UPDATED (02/28/14)
The winners have been revealed (see below).
Overall score: 8/19. A pretty surprising night !
- "Me, Myself and Mum" becomes the 3rd directorial debut to win Best Film, and only the 2nd to win both Best Directorial Debut & Best Film.
- Guillaume Gallienne wins at least 2 César (Actor and Adapted Screenplay), and I'm not sure who technically wins the awards for Best Film/Debut (the director or producer ?). He may have won 4 César in one year, I guess it's a record.
- "Blue is the Warmest Color" wins only 1 César, making the Palme d'Or reputation a hit-and-miss with the Academy: "Sous le soleil de Satan" (lost Best Film), "The Pianist" (won Best Film), "The Class" (lost), "Amour" (won), "Blue..." (lost).
- Roman Polanski is the absolute recordman of the Directing category, with 4 wins for 4 nominations. This is the 1st time that he wins for a French-speaking film.
- This makes "Venus in Fur" the 2nd film in César history to win ONLY Best Director, after "Danton" (1983).
- Interesting fact about the films up for the "Big Five" (Best Film, Director, Actress, Actor, Screenplay): "Venus in Fur" and "9 Month Stretch" become the first films up for the Big Five to NOT win Best Film. But they both won at least 1 award.
- Albert Dupontel is now a César winner !
- Sandrine Kiberlain becomes the 5th actress to win both Breakthrough & Leading Actress.
- Best Supporting Actress Adèle Haenel is 24, quite close of the record for youngest winner in this category (Emmanuelle Béart, 23).
- Niels Arestrup becomes the absolute recordman of the Supporting Actor category, with 3 wins.
- Both screenplay and leading acting awards went to comedies. There is also a symmetry between those awards: actress/original screenplay, actor/adapted screenplay. This has never happened since the creation of the Adapted category in 2005.
- "The Broken Circle Breakdown" becomes only the 2nd film from Belgium to win Best Foreign Film. Some weeks ago, the band from the movie performed at the ceremony for the Technical César, maybe a hint that the Academy truly loved the film :)
