Knight And Day

Dir: James Mangold

Written By: Patrick O Neil

Starring: Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz and Paul Dano

Knight and Day has a story but its not really that important, all you need to know is that for reasons explained in the film Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz have to go on the run from C.I.A agents. Cue action sequences, comedy and a growing romance…

On the surface Knight and Day doesn’t seem to inspire a lot of confidence. It has two lead stars who seem to be well beyond their best work and seems like the typical star vehicle film. However Knight and Day while not without its flaws is much more enjoyable than the other action films this year and is neither as dull as Salt or as macho driven and lazily written as The Dispensable I mean The Expendables. While predictable and clichéd Knight and Day has a sense of fun that never goes away and is entertaining for its 110 minute running time.

A lot of this is down to the lead performances from Cruise and Diaz. Cruise gives his most likeable performance in years and is enigmatic and exciting as the rogue C.I.A agent. Diaz doesn’t do anything you haven’t seen her do before, but her and Cruise work well as a central pairing and carry the film through its duller moments.

The action in Knight and Day is a lot more exciting and spectacular than you would expect with the opening plane punch up, the train fight and the race through Seville being the action highlights of the film. However despite its good action sequences, two lead performances and sense of fun there are some issues. The plot is fairly ludicrous and lightweight but that isn’t so much of a problem and is actually a welcome refresher from Salt, The Expendables and Predators all of which take themselves more seriously than they should. Also talented actors such as Paul Dano are wasted in minor roles, Cruise and Diaz are obviously the selling point and stars of the film but a bigger role for the brilliant Dano would have helped the film.

Overall Knight and Day is nothing special but perfectly enjoyable, fun, with two solid likable lead performances and well-done action sequences.

One Sentence Summary: Cruise and Diaz work well together in what is a reasonably fun and enjoyable action film.

6/10
