Megamind

Directed By: Tom McGrath

Writers: Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons

Starring: Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, Tina Fey, David Cross and Brad Pitt

I went into Megamind expecting a well-made, decent film that was nothing special but slightly enjoyable while it was on. What I got was a brilliantly made and at times hilarious film and my favourite animated film of the year so far.

Megamind tells the story of the titular character, Megamind. Both Megamind and Metro Man were sent to earth as babies, both destined for greatness with their superhuman powers. However Megamind ends up landing in jail and being brought up amidst a life of crime, while Metro Man is brought up in wealth and joy. In their school years Megamind is the outcast, while Metro Man is the hero. This continues on for years with Megamind intent on being the best villain of them all, while Metro Man defends Metro City. However when Megamind finally defeats his foe, he starts to wonder, what good is it being evil, when you have no good to fight against?

Megamind is a refreshing and original take on a story we have seen a thousand times before. The animated superhero film is not a new genre and arguably had its “Citizen Kane” with Pixar’s The Incredibles. However Megamind is not just a compilation of the best bits from various animated films but a great-animated film in it’s own right. It has a cool original premise and although it gets slightly predictable as it nears it conclusion, Megamind is nowhere near as cliché or unoriginal as you might expect. The animation in Megamind is gorgeous and the film looks great, like Metro Man in the film we almost take great animation for granted nowadays due to the bucket load of animated films we get every year. The film did not particularly need 3D, however at least it was actual 3D and not some poor post conversion (Last Airbender, Clash of the Titans…)

The film has tremendous voice acting all around. Will Ferrell’s voice is the star of the show here and he is tremendous as Megamind, with his pronunciation of metro city and school getting a laugh every time. Brad Pitt does a brilliant job with Metro Man and Tina Fey and Jonah Hill also do good jobs with their characters. What really makes the film stand out though, aside from its great visuals and great voice acting is the great sense of humour it has. Megamind is one of the funnier films I have seen this year and there are some genuinely funny and quotable lines. The film also has many visual references and gags that work really well. The film also has a great soundtrack with ACDC and the Electric Light Orchestra all having songs used in good ways.

The film is not perfect however, it is perhaps 5 or 10 minutes to long, is slightly predictable in parts and gets slightly hectic in its final act. However overall Megamind is a very enjoyable, funny and well-made film that is much better than you might think. Megamind is my favourite animated film of the year and one, where I look forward to a deserved sequel and would consider getting the blu-ray.

One Sentence Summary: Gorgeous visuals, great voice acting, a cool premise and moments of genuine comedy make Megamind the best-animated film of 2010.
