Red
Directed By: Robert Schwentke
Written By: Jon and Eric Hoeber
Starring: Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren and John Malkovich
Red is similar to this years previous action film, The Expendables in a variety of ways. It contains a cast that brings together well-respected, old actors and puts them in a knock about action film. The crucial difference however between Red and The Expendables is that Red is less bloated, less serious and more fun.
Starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren and John Malkovich, Red is a film that is made by its cast. A fairly clichéd and forgettable plot, as well as some mildly enjoyable while your watching them action scenes are made much more fun than they should be due to the caliber of the cast.
The star of the film however is undoubtedly John Malkovich. Malkovich is one of those actors who will always be good in his role, even if the rest of the film is poor and here is no exception. As an overly paranoid ex C.I.A agent, Malkovich is without a doubt the best part of this film. In terms of the rest of the cast, Bruce Willis does the typical Bruce Willis performance while Morgan Freeman does the Morgan Freeman performance and is sorely underused and Helen Mirren does well…the Helen Mirren performance.
The film has some enjoyable action sequences but is rather slow in places, especially at the start and takes a while to get going. It has its share of dull moments however and like The Expendables is not as fun as you would expect or hope. Ultimately the film does not take itself to seriously and with its fantastic cast is able to succeed as one of those, enjoyable while your watching it but wont see it again type of films. It is much more enjoyable than action films such as Salt and The Expendables and is on a par with Knight and Day.
One Sentence Summary: A good cast makes this fairly average comedy/action an enjoyable but forgettable time at the movies.
Rating: 6/10
