Salt
Directed By: Phillip Noyce
Written By: Kurt Wimmer
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor
Salt is the latest action blockbuster from Angelina Jolie, an actress who has been in both in serious, period piece dramas (Changeling) and like Salt, action blockbusters (Tomb Raider and Wanted) Salt, despite an interesting premise (CIA agent finds out she may actually be a Russian sleeper agent, trained from birth to be activated and strike at the heart of the US) is neither as interesting and dramatic as films like Changeling or as fun as films like Wanted.
Pardon the pun but Salt could of really done with some pepper. The problem with Salt is that despite it being an action thriller, it is never really that exciting and in fact is quite dull, slow and ponderous. It also doesn’t help that most of the action scenes are poor recreations of set pieces done much better in the Bourne and Bond movies. The action and the story are very silly and over the top, with numerous plot holes however instead of taking it in its stride and having a bit of fun, it takes itself deadly seriously. It doesn’t provide as a fun action film or as a dramatic character study.
Salt has a great cast, with Jolie, the brilliant Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor all good actors who aren’t given enough to do. Salt Is meant to be a mysterious film, full of twists you don’t see coming, except the film is rather predictable and there is really only one twist that could be called a surprise (Except if you know the acting career of Liev Schreiber then it isn’t)
At times Salt seems like a mix tape of elements from 24, Alias, Jason Bourne and James Bond but not being as good as any of the above. The film also desperately tries to set itself up to be a franchise but frankly, I couldn’t care what happens next as the film was nowhere near as exciting or interesting enough to make me want to visit this world again.
Overall Salt is not as exciting or fun as you want it to be, or as interesting and gripping as you want it to be, it lacks originality, is rather predictable, is full of plot holes, is very silly and ridiculous, it takes itself way to seriously and is rather dull and ponderous. The cast, despite being wasted keeps the movie alive and as the films length is a short one, it does enough to keep you interested but not enough to make you excited or want to care. Not awful by any means, but not very good either and despite the fact it sounds like it is going to be better than The Expendables, it isn’t for one reason…self awareness. Although Expendables also takes itself to seriously, it has more fun action scenes and knows its silly and over the top. Angelina Jolie, you can do much better than this….
One Sentence Summary: Dull, ridiculous and no fun, Salts good cast is wasted in a film that could of done with some pepper.
